What is an RespectED Advocate?
An RespectED educational advocate assists families of children with any learning or behavioral concerns. Some students have needs that are already identified, whereas other parents seek support in helping identify issues that may be affecting their child's learning and school experience.
Why might a parent need a RespectED Advocate?
A parent can benefit from the services of a RespectED educational advocate to help understand the information that is provided by the school regarding a student's educational status, individual needs, disability identified, eligibility for special education and related services, eligibility for accommodations under Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Sometimes a parent does not agree with the school's evaluation or proposed interventions. A RespectED advocate can help the parent negotiate the legal and educational systems that govern schools. A RespectED advocate is able to assist in this way because advocates have expertise and experience with schools, legal and ethical requirements for educators, special education law, disability law and best practices for educational interventions.
What will a RespectED Advocate do?
Meet with a parent to determine what the parent wants to accomplish in terms of their child's education.
Reviews all information available regarding any evaluations and proposed and/or completed interventions.
Help the parent understand specific terms, acronyms, legal requirements, options, rights and responsibilities.
Accompany the parent to meetings with school staff to promote understanding and collaboration.
Provide input on specific plans developed by the educational team.
Ensure that the process remains collaborative and focused on the needs of the child.
Fees*:
Initial Consultation- 30 minutes- No charge
This conversation will determine if RespectED is the right place for the parent to seek assistance and provide information about advocacy services.
Record Review and Planning Meeting- up to 5 hours- $200.00
The advocate will review all relevant documents including: school evaluations, private evaluations, progress reports, Individual Education Plans (IEPs), special education paperwork and documentation, 504 accommodation plans, report cards, work samples, and any other relevant information. After reviewing the information, the advocate will meet with the parent(s) to discuss options and plan for next steps.
School meeting attendance and follow-up- Hourly rate- $50.00 per hour
The advocate will attend meetings with the parent at the school. These may be special education meetings, problem solving meetings, 504 accommodation meetings, or parent/teacher conferences.
*These fees are valid for a 100 mile radius from San Antonio, Texas. If travel is required for services to other locations, a 10% additional charge for in-person services will be added to defray travel expenses. If services are provided through electronic conferencing, no additional charge will apply.
Sliding scale is available for families with financial need. No family should be without services because of a lack of financial resources.
